After the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, in which Bavaria sided with the losers against Prussia, this church was built as a bulwark of Catholicism against the now neighboring Protestant Prussian lands. That Prussia whose drive to create and shape a German nation set off a chain of events that ultimately led to the destruction of the stained glass windows in the southern wall of the nave by the impact of a shell during the American troops' invasion in March 1945. Subsequently, the church became too small for the congregation, which had grown due to the influx of refugees, and it was abandoned in 1966 in favor of a new place of worship.
The spirit of a new era turned away from the old splendor and the church Latin that the faithful did not understand. The church building became unwanted, was neglected and gutted. Even though people are now taking care of it again, its future remains uncertain.
