The paper factory was developed in the 1880s in the course of industrialization from an even older paper mill. The factory grew out of this nucleus like additions in a domino game until it covered a huge site with a labyrinthine collection of halls, workshops, laboratories and offices. At its peak, the company employed around 2000 people. It did not survive a succession of bankruptcies following various crises from 2008 onwards. In 2021, the remaining company finally closed its doors. The machines were sold and dismantled.
A later director had been an employee of Wernher von Braun in Peenemünde and was taken to the USA during "Operation Paperclip". He returned home a few years later. After the Apollo 1 fire disaster, a hardly inflammable paper was developed in this factory for the manuals used aboard the Apollo moon flights.
